Shuffled Ink is a premium playing card manufacturer known for producing high-quality, collectible decks. They partnered with me to explore how a contemporary deck could reflect the evolving culture of play, where tabletop gaming and video gaming overlap.

The result, Pixel Ages, is a custom deck that reinterprets traditional playing card iconography through the lens of retro video game pixel art. The project balances nostalgia with modern execution, creating a unique visual system that feels both familiar and culturally current.

The goal was to honor classic playing card structure and hierarchy, while incorporating a distinct visual language inspired by retro gaming. By doing so, I had developed a cohesive system that feels premium and nostalgic.

The design needed to resonate with both tabletop and video game audiences without alienating either group.

The core idea behind The Pixel Ages was to treat pixel art as a full system rather than decoration.

I started by researching traditional playing card layouts and iconography, along with video game design, and how they both rely on economy of form and instantly readable symbols. This research informed an approach that focused on structure, legibility, and consistency, ensuring the pixel language felt purposeful rather than purely stylistic.

The final deck presents a cohesive visual identity that merges the tactile tradition of playing cards with the visual language of retro gaming.

By treating pixel art as a structured language, the deck creates a meaningful connection between analog and digital play.
